Mary Tillman Smith was born in rural Mississippi, where she spent her life until her death. As a young woman, she labored in the fields as a tenant farmer and sharecropper. Over her life she worked as a domestic, cook, and gardener. After retiring in the mid-70s, she decided to take up painting to pay tribute to God. Soon her yard, fences, and outdoor buildings were covered in her simple, bold portraits of Jesus, people, and animals - all painted on tin and plywood. Her stark and colorful paintings, many with figures with hands raised to the sky in praise, are poignant reminders of her simple faith. At Home has a wide inventory of her work including published pieces from several major collections.
